1. Smart Tunnel

Built in 2007, SMART an acronym for stormwater management and road tunnel, is the longest stormwater tunnel in South East Asia and second longest in Asia. It is the longest multi-purpose tunnel in the world. The tunnel is designed to prevent billions of dollars of possible flood damage and costs from traffic congestion in Kuala Lumpur's city centre. With the tunnel length of 9.7km and the motorway tunnel length of 4km, the SMART system is able to divert large volumes of flood water via a holding pond, bypass tunnel and storage reservoir. It is operated in three modes: (1) The tunnel acts as a road tunnel when there is no flood. (2) In situations where flood levels are moderate, rainwater will be diverted to the lower drainage chamber in the tunnel while the upper level of the tunnel remains open to motorists. Finally, (3) the tunnel will be closed to traffic during exceptionally heavy floods and is used fully for floodwaters to pass through with the use of watertight gates. The SMART tunnel receives international recognition as it was described by the United Nations as one of the most innovative projects in the world for an urban issue in April 2015. In 2011, it received the UN Habitat Scroll of Honour Award for its innovative and unique management of stormwater and peak hour traffic.

 

2. MRT

Mass Rapid Transit or better known with its acronym MRT is a planned 3-line mass rapid transit system in the Greater Kuala Lumpur (part of Klang Valley region) conurbation in Malaysia. The 3 lines are MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line, MRT Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya Line, and MRT Circle Line. It envisages a "Wheel and Spoke" concept comprising two northwest-southeast radial lines and one circle line looping around Kuala Lumpur. The MRT lines, when completed, will be operated as components of the Klang Valley Public Transport System. The MRT project represents one of the economic entry point project identified for the Greater Kuala Lumpur/Klang Valley National Key Economic Area under the Economic Transformation Program by the Malaysian government. The new MRT system is designed to improve and transform Kuala Lumpur’s poor and sorely inadequate public transportation coverage and to propel the Greater Kuala Lumpur metropolitan area to be on par with that of a developed city. The MRT will not only significantly increase the current inadequate rail network but will also serve to integrate the existing rail networks and alleviate the severe traffic congestion in the Greater KL metropolitan area.
